What is a PayPal charge?
Anything bought through a PayPal checkout — eBay purchases, small online shops, digital goods, donations, marketplace sellers, and subscriptions billed via PayPal 'automatic payments'. The name after the asterisk is the seller's PayPal business name, which can be wildly different from the website you bought from: web shops often bill under a parent company or the owner's registered entity.
Important: a processor prefix identifies who processed the payment — not necessarily who you bought from.

How to verify the charge
Check your PayPal activity ↗- Log into PayPal and open Activity — every charge on your statement has a matching transaction there with the seller's real name, email, and the item. This is authoritative; the statement line is just a shadow of it.
- The phone number in many PAYPAL * descriptors (like 402-935-7733) is PayPal's own line, not the seller's — calling it reaches PayPal support, which can also identify the transaction.
- Check PayPal's 'Automatic payments' settings (under account settings → payments) for subscriptions — a recurring PAYPAL * charge is usually a billing agreement you approved once and forgot.
- If the amount doesn't appear in your PayPal activity at all, check whether a family member has a PayPal account funded by your card.
Is it fraud?
A PAYPAL * charge missing from your own PayPal activity is a genuine warning sign: either someone else's PayPal account is funded by your card, or your card details are being used to open one. Check family first, then lock the card and contact both your bank and PayPal. Charges that DO appear in your activity are disputes for PayPal's own resolution centre first — it's faster than a bank chargeback and doesn't burn the relationship.
