Getting your statement out of American Express
American Express is card-centric and unusually generous with online transaction history: two years of activity is viewable and downloadable directly, with older billing statements retrievable from an archive on request. Downloads for accounting software cover recent activity plus the past six billing statements.

What American Express gives you natively
Amex natively offers PDF, Excel, and CSV downloads of up to two years of transaction history, plus Quicken and QuickBooks downloads covering recent activity and the past six billing statements. This makes Amex the strongest native-export issuer in this group — most banks stop at CSV. Older history beyond the download windows lives in archived PDF statements retrieved on request.
How far back you can go
American Express states that your previous two years of transactions can be viewed electronically, with sorting, filtering, and download as PDF, Excel, or CSV. Billing statements older than the current list are pulled from an archive: select the statement you need and Amex says it will be available online within 24 hours. The Quicken/QuickBooks/CSV software download is limited to recent activity and the past six billing statements. American Express statement quirks worth knowing
- Each charge carries an Amex reference number, and the detailed view often includes the merchant's address and phone number under the charge line — richer merchant metadata than bank statements typically show.
- Apple Pay charges are prefixed (commonly shown as AplPay before the merchant name), per user reports, so the same merchant appears under two descriptors depending on payment method.
- On accounts with additional cardmembers, statements group charges by cardmember rather than in one chronological list.
- As a charge/credit card statement there is no running balance column, and payments/credits are presented separately from new charges.
