How to cancel your Max (HBO Max) subscription

HBO Max is Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming service, and its repeated rebrands (HBO Max to Max and back to HBO Max) mean the same subscription can appear under several different names on a statement — including WM MAX, a leftover WarnerMedia company name. Charges billed through Google often show as GOOGLE *WM MAX LLC, which many people fail to connect to their streaming subscription.

On your statement it usually appears as HBOMAX, HELP.HBOMAX.COM, HELP.MAX.COM, WM MAX, GOOGLE *WM MAX LLC, WBD MAX. Not sure the charge is really Max (HBO Max)? Identify it first.

Cancel on the HBO Max website

Go to hbomax.com/subscription in a browser and sign in.
Choose Cancel Your Subscription.
Confirm the cancellation and note the expiration date shown on the confirmation screen — you can stream until then.

Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel the subscription; it keeps renewing until you cancel.

Cancel in the mobile app

Open the HBO Max app and tap your account icon.
Tap the Settings gear, then Subscription.
Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
If there is no cancel option, the top of the subscription screen names who bills you — cancel with that provider instead.

If you're billed through Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, Samsung or a TV provider

Apple: Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions, select HBO Max and cancel.
Google Play: Play Store profile, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, select HBO Max and cancel (these charges show as WM Max LLC).
Roku: from the Roku home screen highlight the HBO Max channel, press the star button, choose Manage subscription, then cancel.
Samsung TV: sign in at samsungcheckout.com, open Purchase History, then Subscriptions, and unsubscribe.
Amazon: manage the subscription or channel from Amazon's subscriptions page.
Cable, internet or mobile provider: if HBO Max comes through your TV or phone package, only that provider can cancel it — contact them directly.

Refunds, timing and what you'll still be charged

HBO Max does not give refunds or prorated credits for the unused part of a billing period: after cancelling you keep access until the subscription expires at the end of the current cycle. The major exception is discounted 12-month plans billed monthly — cancel one of those mid-term and the remaining monthly instalments stay payable for the rest of the 12 months, with streaming continuing until the term ends. Third-party billers apply their own refund rules, so Apple, Google or provider-billed subscribers must ask that biller.

Watch out for these

Discounted 12-month (Saver-style) plans are a commitment: cancelling does not stop the remaining monthly payments before the term ends.
The service has been rebranded more than once, so your statement descriptor may not match the app name on your TV — WM MAX and HBOMAX can both be the same subscription.
If HBO was added through a cable or mobile package, the streaming app is just a login — the money flows through the provider, and only the provider can stop it.
The in-app subscription screen shows who bills you at the top; skipping that detail is the main reason cancellations fail.

After you cancel: make sure it stuck

Note the expiration date on the cancellation confirmation screen and keep the confirmation email.
Reopen the subscription page after a day and confirm it shows an expiry rather than a renewal date.

WM Max LLC is the Warner Bros. Discovery entity behind HBO Max (WM stands for WarnerMedia). It appears most often as GOOGLE *WM MAX LLC when the subscription is billed through Google Play. It is your HBO Max subscription, not an unrelated company.

Will HBO Max refund me if I cancel mid-month?

No — there are no prorated refunds. You keep streaming until the end of the period you paid for and simply are not billed again. Refunds are reserved for exceptional cases such as unauthorized charges, and third-party billers follow their own policies.
