How to cancel your Netflix subscription

Netflix is a subscription video streaming service billed monthly to the payment method on the account. The charge confuses people because the descriptor varies by bank and region (Los Gatos, a phone number, or even Amsterdam for some internationally processed payments), and because a family member's account can quietly bill a shared card for years. Amounts also shift with plan changes, extra-member add-ons, and tax.

On your statement it usually appears as NETFLIX.COM, NETFLIX.COM LOS GATOS CA, NETFLIX INC, NETFLIX.COM 866-579-7172, NETFLIX AMSTERDAM. Not sure the charge is really Netflix? Identify it first.

Cancel on the Netflix website

  1. Go to netflix.com/cancelplan in a browser, or sign in and open Account, then the Manage membership section.
  2. Choose Cancel.
  3. Choose Finish Cancellation to confirm.
  4. Look for the confirmation email sent to the address on the account.

This is the only way to cancel a Netflix-billed account. Signing out or deleting the Netflix app does not cancel it.

If you're billed through Apple

  1. This only applies to long-standing accounts: Netflix stopped offering Apple billing to new and rejoining members years ago.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select Netflix and choose Cancel Subscription, more than 24 hours before your renewal date.
  4. Netflix puts the account on hold for 30 days after Apple billing stops, then closes it fully.

If Netflix is part of a phone or TV package

  1. Sign in to Netflix and open your Account page.
  2. Check the Membership section: if there is no Cancel option, it names the partner that bills you.
  3. Cancel through that partner (mobile carrier, internet or TV provider) using their account portal or support line.

Refunds, timing and what you'll still be charged

Netflix does not prorate. When you cancel, the account stays active until the end of the current billing period and simply is not charged again; there is no refund for the unused days. You can see the exact end date in your Payment History. One exception: if the account is already on hold (for example after a failed payment), it closes immediately when you cancel. If you cancelled but a gift card or promotional balance remains, Netflix keeps the service running until that balance is used up.

Watch out for these

  • Deleting the app or signing out of all devices does nothing to the billing — the membership keeps renewing until you cancel from the account page.
  • Netflix offers a pause option (in one-month blocks, up to three months) instead of cancelling; if you click through the flow quickly you can end up paused rather than cancelled. Pause is not available on every plan or payment method.
  • If you still see charges after cancelling, the most common cause is a second account — often a household member or an ex who signed up with your card. Banks also auto-update card numbers, so an old account can follow you onto a new card.
  • A remaining gift card balance keeps the account running after cancellation, which can look like the cancel did not work.

Cancellation flows change — confirm against Netflix's current account or help page (official help).

After you cancel: make sure it stuck

  • Check for the cancellation confirmation email Netflix sends to the account's email address.
  • Open Account and confirm the Membership section shows the end date rather than a renewal date; Payment History shows when billing stops.
  • Check your next bank statement for any NETFLIX descriptor — a new charge means either the cancel did not complete or a different account is billing your card.
  • Generate a paper trail with the free cancellation-letter tool — useful if billing continues and you need proof.
  • If it keeps charging after you cancel, follow the escalation playbook before disputing.

While you're at it — find the ones you forgot

Netflix is rarely the only recurring charge. Upload a statement and find every subscription — trials that converted, quiet price rises, duplicates — each with its yearly cost, so you can clear them in one sitting.

Questions

Netflix cancellation FAQs

Why am I still being charged after cancelling Netflix?

Either the cancellation happened after the billing date (the final charge covers the period you already started), a different Netflix account is using your card (common with shared or family cards), or you are billed through a partner like Apple or a carrier and cancelling on Netflix's site did not stop that billing. Netflix has a dedicated help page for charges after cancelling — start by checking which email address the charge's account belongs to.

Can I cancel Netflix in the app?

The mobile app can take you to the same Manage membership page as the website, but there is no separate in-app cancel mechanism — cancellation always goes through your Netflix account page, and deleting the app does not cancel anything.

Can I pause Netflix instead of cancelling?

Yes. Netflix lets eligible members pause their membership in one-month increments for up to three months in total. Billing stops while paused and resumes automatically. It is not available on all plans or payment methods.

What happens to my profiles and watch history if I cancel?

Netflix keeps your viewing activity and account details for a period after cancellation, so if you restart your membership later your profiles and recommendations come back. If you want to stop household members restarting the account, change your password and sign out of all devices.

Why is NETFLIX.COM on my bank statement?

That descriptor is Netflix (video streaming). If you don't recognise it, confirm any charge with our free lookup before cancelling or disputing — descriptors often name a biller or platform rather than the service itself.

Netflix is still charging me after I cancelled — what now?

First check you cancelled in the right place: if you subscribed through Apple, Google, Amazon or a TV provider, the service's own website can't stop that billing. If it still charges, keep your cancellation confirmation and follow our guide for a subscription that keeps charging after you cancel — and only dispute with your bank as a last resort.
